How to calculate an average

Add the numbers up, then divide by how many there are.

The mean equals the sum of the values divided by the number of values.

For 4, 8 and 15 the sum is 27 and the count is 3, so the average is 9.

Mean, median or mode?

Mean
The total shared out evenly. One extreme value moves it a long way.
Median
The middle value once they are in order. The honest answer for pay, prices and waiting times.
Mode
The value that turns up most often. The only one that works for things you cannot add, like sizes.

Questions

How do I find the average of two numbers?

Add them and halve the result. The average of 17 and 24 is 20.5, exactly halfway between.

Is the average the same as the mean?

In everyday use, yes. In statistics, average is the wider word: the median and the mode are averages too.

Can I average percentages?

Only if each percentage covers a group of the same size. If 20% of 500 customers renewed and 60% of 50 did, the answer is 130 out of 550, or 23.6% — not 40%. Use the weighted tab, with the group sizes as weights.

How do I work out a grade average?

If everything counts equally, use the simple tab. If assignments carry different percentages or credit hours, use the weighted tab and give each score its weight.

Where do my numbers go?

Nowhere. They are worked out by your own browser and never leave it. The site counts anonymous visits with Yandex Metrica, which sees the page you opened, not what you typed.
